A Guide to FN Herstal Firearms
Fabrique Nationale Herstal, more commonly known as FN Herstal or FN, is a gun manufacturer from Belgium. The company was founded in 1889 to build 150,000 rifles for the Belgian government. John Moses Browning partnered with FN in 1897 to design and develop guns with them. In 1902, they began manufacturing his Auto-5, the first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun. Today, it is the largest exporter of military small arms in Europe and owns entities in the U.S., U.K., and Finland.
FN manufactures a full line of firearms including handguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, precision rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers, and subcompact carbines. They offer commercial sales as well as equip law enforcement and the military.
FN SCAR®
The FN SCAR is one of the company’s most popular models. SCAR stands for Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle. The FN SCAR is a gas-operated self-loading rifle with a rotating bolt. The SCAR is highly modular and adaptable to your needs. The U.S. military has been using the FN SCAR in its operations since 2009. Currently, they only use the SCAR-H (for heavy); they previously used the SCAR-L (light) as well.
Civilians can purchase three versions of the SCAR: the 16S, 17S, and 20S. These are the semi-automatic versions of the FN MKs of these numbers. All three guns are fully ambidextrous with accessory rails for mounting scopes, lights, or lasers, making them easily adaptable to any shooter and shooting position.
The SCAR 16S is light and quick-shooting, chambered in 5.56x45mm. It features a free-floating, cold hammer-forged MIL-SPEC barrel with a chrome-lined bore. The SCAR 17S is a bit heavier and chambered in 7.62x51mm.
The SCAR 20S is the newest and most powerful. It’s perfectly calibrated for long-range precision fire, with the ability to engage targets up to 800 yards away. It is chambered in 7.62x51mm like the 17S, but the rifle itself is bigger and longer. The SCAR 20S features a gas-operated piston that absorbs recoil efficiently to improve follow-up shots, and its match-grade, two-stage trigger breaks at 3.5-4.5 pounds.

FN PS90®
The FN PS90 is a unique-looking bullpup semi-automatic rifle that has been in production since 2005. This civilian-legal rife features a 16.04” cold hammer-forged MIL-SPEC barrel equipped with an integrated muzzle for reducing recoil. It is chambered in 5.7x28mm and fires from a closed bolt for greater accuracy. Fully ambidextrous, this rifle includes dual magazine latches, cocking handles, and a thumbhole stock with a molded-in sling attachment point. The PS90 is small and lightweight, with an overall length of just over 26” and a weight of 6.28 lbs. This makes it easy to hold, maneuver, and aim.
The military and law enforcement version of this rifle is the P90, which was developed in conjunction with the FN Five-seveN and has been in production since 1990. The P90 is used by militaries and law enforcement agencies around the world, including the U.S. Secret Service. The difference between the P90 and PS90 is that the P90 features standard selective fire, while the PS90 is semi-automatic.

FN Five-seveN®
The FN Five-seveN, or FN 5.7, is a semi-automatic pistol that has been in service since 2000. It is used by military and law enforcement agencies in over 20 countries, including by the U.S. Secret Service. The Five-seveN has been sold to civilians since 2004 and is one of FN’s most popular guns for civilian shooters.
The Five-seveN is named for its use of 5.7x28mm ammunition. It has a 20-round mag capacity and features single-action operation and low felt recoil. The pistol weighs 21 oz. and measures 8.2 inches total. It’s made of cold hammer-forged stainless steel with a chrome-lined chamber and bore. The Five-seveN is available in black, and the FDE model is black with a Flat Dark Earth frame.

Other FN Firearms
In addition to these three popular firearms, FN makes several other firearms for civilian use. Other pistols include the FN 509, which is shorter and heavier than the 5.7; the FNS-9 and FNS-40, which both offer double-action striker-fired operation; and the FNX-9, FNX-40, and FNX-45, which feature double-action/single-action operation.
For rifles, the FN 15 series includes several variations of the AR-15. The FN M249S series is FN’s line of light machine guns, the military version of which is widely used by the U.S. Armed Forces. They also offer the FN Ballista precision rifle, which is a multi-caliber that can be configured in less than two minutes to any of the three available chamberings.
FN also offers shotguns in the FN P-12 and FN SLP series. The P-12 is a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun with a 5+1-round capacity. The FN SLP is a gas-action, semi-automatic 12-gauge with a 6+1-round capacity.
